All dogs need exercise to stay healthy, both mentally and physically. A dog that isn't given the opportunity to exercise regularly is going to become lethargic and depressed. Naturally active lives with a daily walk is an important aspect of your dog's health.

Exercise needs depend mostly on the size/breed and age of your animal. Individuals do vary, and just like humans some have a naturally faster metabolism, and don't have to exercise as much to maintain the same weight. So it's your job to watch your dog's waistline, and take it as an indicator of not enough exercise when they start to get soft or flabby.
Puppies especially need lots of attention and play-time. The more active the play is, the better - so get outside and start throwing tennis balls. Early exercise is good not only for muscle development, but bone and skeletal development also.
If you have an active adult dog, 30 minutes should be the shortest amount of time you walk them. They need to get tired out each day to maintain their healthy state.
Even as your dog ages, exercise is of the utmost importance. Its true that the amount and intensity of exercise will decrease, but let the dog decide when it's time to slow down.
