Dental Care for Canines

Most dogs don't take good care of their teeth. It may be an opposable thumbs issue, we're not quite sure. One thing we've learned you can do to combat this on behalf of your best friend, is to brush their teeth.
Brushing your dogs teeth may seem like a bit much, but if you're ever bothered by their surprisingly bad breath, it shouldn't be a mystery. Besides keeping them from turning yellow, your dog will keep more of their teeth in old age, and may not require vet cleanings, which are very pricey.

First of all, get a doggy toothbrush and toothpaste. They'll have a long handle, soft bristles and an angled head, but don't just use your old brush, it wont be nearly as effective. You also have the option of a small brush that fits over your finger. This can be handy for smaller dogs.

Chewing rawhide or other chew sticks is good for your dogs overall oral health. Chewing is a healthy habit and should be encouraged, this just isn't always easy to understand in the case of puppies.

When you go to brush your dogs teeth, use a circular or oval pattern, and be gentle. You only need to brush the outside of the teeth, and the upper teeth at the back are the most important.
